The sanctuary was built in the fifteenth century on the ruins of a medieval fortress, originally dedicated to San Zeno. It was restructured in the 60s by a group of ‘alpini’ and inhabitants of Lovere, who offered work force and mules to transport material.

How to get there?

From Lovere main square (Piazza XIII Martiri) you can reach the sanctuary in about 45/60 minutes.

Walk along Via Gregorini and then turn left on to Via XX Settembre towards the church of Santa Maria in Valvendra. Take the stairs of Via Valvendra, and continue up hill, turning left at Via Golgi and then right onto via Decio Celeri (see the map at the bottom of the page).

You will now see a brown sign to San Giovanni. Take the little steep road on your left (via San Giovanni). This will lead you to the trail 552, which is only pedestrian.

Follow the road and you will soon find an old cobbled path. Keep walking on the steep path for about 15 minutes until you reach a junction. Turn right, where you see a shrine, and you will reach the fountain of Carrozzone, where you can get some fresh water and rest.

From the fountain, follow the path on your left and you will reach the sanctuary in about 25 minutes. The walk is quite moderately challenging, but the panorama you will enjoy is definitely worth the effort.

On your way back, once you have arrived to the fountain of Carrozzone, you can take the paved road. At the end of the road, when you meet a shrine, turn right and keep walking down in via Davine that will bring you back to the historic centre of Lovere.
